Becoming
an Area Representative
Global Insights
Area Representatives are the backbone of our program. They are our direct
link to host families, high schools, and the community. Global Insights
relies on its Area Representatives to promote the program in their local
communities, to select qualified host families, and to provide support for
the students, families, and high schools during the year, all the while
remaining in regular contact with the Global Insights office. Global Insights
evaluates the qualifications of prospective field staff based on their
ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. The position of Area
Representative with Global Insights calls upon a diverse set of skills. Some
of the responsibilities include:
Preliminary Research
Learning about the Global Insights Program
Learning about exchange in your community
Setting your placement goals
Building Rapport with High Schools In Your Community
Set up an appointment with the appropriate person
Introduce Global Insights to the school
Determine the school's policy regarding exchange students Complete a High
School Information Sheet
Maintain contact with the school
Gathering Host Family Leads
Networking
Newspaper, radio, Public Service Announcements, and other publicity outlets
Promotional materials
Community groups, public speaking
Display booths
Selecting Families and Matching Students
Prescreening
Host Family Application and references
In-home interview (Interview Evaluation Form)
Evaluating the qualifications of potential host families
Confirming the placement (Host Family Agreement)
High School Enrollment Form
Submitting all paperwork
Preparing Families and Students
The Host Family Orientation
The Student Welcome Orientation
Supervising the Program in Your Area
Airport greetings
Welcome Party
Activities throughout the exchange experience

Student Progress Reports - 5 times yearly
Farewell Party
Global Insights Area Representatives receive compensation for each student
placed and supervised. This fee is to offset expenses such as phone calls,
postage, and mileage incurred in the placement and supervision of each
student. Fees are paid in two installments - the first half is paid after all
placement paperwork is received and during scheduled payment periods. The
remaining portion is paid to cover supervision of students and is related to
receipt of Student Progress Reports.
There are cultural advantages for Area Representatives, including meeting new
people in their community, sharing their American heritage and culture, and
having opportunities to travel. Experience for future employment can be
gained through the skills acquired as an Area Representative, including
public relations, interviewing, organization, and counseling.
